Buying an off-road e-scooter: what to look for
Off-road riding puts very different demands on an e-scooter than the ride to the station: more power, coarser tyres, real suspension and stronger brakes. Here is what to check when choosing an off-road or performance scooter.
What makes a scooter off-road-worthy?
Four things decide whether a scooter can handle loose terrain. Power: for sand, grass and hills you want at least 800–1000 W; serious off-road models run dual motors. Tyres: pneumatic, coarse-profile tyres of 10 inches or more; solid tyres are a handicap off-road. Suspension: without front and rear damping, roots and potholes punish your wrists and the frame. Brakes: on loose ground you want disc brakes, preferably hydraulic.
Weight: the price of stability
Off-road scooters are heavy: 25 to 50+ kg, versus 12–15 kg for a city scooter. That weight buys calm and traction on terrain, but you won't carry it up a staircase. Mostly city with the occasional forest path? Pick a lighter all-rounder. Real terrain? Accept the kilos.
Where are you allowed to ride off-road?
Honest answer: most off-road and performance scooters are not allowed on Dutch public roads. Private property (with the owner's permission) is where this class lives. See our guide on the law and RDW approval.
Battery and range on terrain
Factory range figures are measured under ideal conditions. On loose terrain, with climbing and full power, real-world range can be roughly half. More in our battery guide.
Veelgestelde vragen
What does a good off-road e-scooter cost?
Entry-level models with off-road tyres start around €700-800. Serious dual-motor models sit between €1,500 and €2,500; the extreme class goes beyond €4,000.
Can I take an off-road scooter into the forest?
Only on terrain where the owner allows it. Public forest paths fall under Dutch traffic law — the same rules as on public roads apply.
Is an off-road scooter practical for the city?
It works, but weight and size are overkill. For commuting you are better off with a city or commuter model; see our scooter finder.
