Electric scooter for children — choosing safely

An electric scooter for your child is a lovely gift, but safety comes first. Mind the age, a low and limited speed, good protection and a safe place to ride. At MoveVolt we have a separate Kids' scooter segment with 14 models tuned to exactly this, so you can choose with peace of mind.

Age and speed limiting

The most important thing for a kids' scooter is a low, limited speed. Preferably choose a model set to around 6–12 km/h, matching your child's age and experience. Many children's models have adjustable speed settings, so you can start gently and let the speed grow along as your child becomes more skilled.

  • Always start young or inexperienced children on the lowest setting, even if they'd rather go faster.
  • Only increase the speed once your child steers stably, can corner confidently and brakes reliably.
  • Take into account the stated maximum weight and the recommended age per model.

Our 14 models in the Kids' scooter segment are specially selected for this, with a size, weight and speed that suit children. Unsure which age fits which model? We're happy to help in the showroom or via the selection guide.

Helmet and protection

For children, protection is not a luxury but standard, precisely because they still fall often while learning:

  • Helmet — always, even at a gentle pace and on private land. A well-fitting helmet is the most important protection.
  • Knee and elbow pads and wrist guards — especially for beginners still finding their balance.
  • Sturdy closed shoes instead of slippers or sandals, so the feet are well protected.

Also teach your child the basics: accelerate gently, look ahead, brake in time, and never two children at once on one scooter. Practise the first few times together in a quiet spot and supervise closely, especially in the beginning, until your child has really mastered it.

Where may your child ride?

As with scooters for adults: most children's models are not admitted on public roads. So let your child ride in a safe, car-free place such as your own driveway, garden, enclosed yard or a playground where this is allowed.

  • Avoid ordinary roads, busy cycle paths and hills where your child can pick up speed or end up in traffic.
  • Choose a flat, clear surface without traffic and without obstacles.
  • Unsure about the rules in your situation? Consult our legality hub for the current state of affairs.

Agree clear rules with your child in advance: where they may and may not ride, how fast, and that riding stops the moment the helmet comes off. That way safe riding becomes a habit by itself. Need help choosing? In the showroom we give expert advice and you can take a test ride together with your child to see what fits. All children's models are in stock, with free shipping, a 2-year warranty and instalment payment via Klarna.
